Young’s, conglomerates and the AI split: The Companies and Markets Show
The latest IC Companies and Markets podcast kicks off with a look at two pubcos hoping to benefit from an upturn in the weather and a summer of sport. Christopher Akers joins the show to examine recent results from Young’s (YNGN) and Fuller, Smith & Turner (FSTA) and asks what the future has in store.
Jennifer Johnson then discusses this week’s IC cover story, on company spin-offs and the wider trend (or non-trend) of conglomerates breaking up. She runs the rule over companies in the pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and industrials sectors, and discusses whether divestments are creating or destroying value.
Finally, in the week that Nvidia (US:NVDA) became the world’s largest company, Dave Baxter looks at the funds trying to exploit this trend. The team also discuss the growing imbalances in the US market - some of which are less obvious than you may think - and ask how much of a problem they really pose.

I can’t imagine Labour is going to be constructive towards the UK stock market - their first move will be to raise as much tax as they can for their pet projects. And if Angela Rayner has her way, the wealthier will be squeezed until their pips squeak. 🧐

Buybucks, except in really extreme situations, are mostly wastes of money. Those companies talking buybacks as a cliche don't know what they're up to, and mostly start buyback their shares at the peak price and stop buying at the bottom.

Nice en point chair of the review this week. Nice to get facts addressed, rather than boys jokes. Very interesting article in Economist from an interview of one of the board directors from Open AI who sacked Sam A. It has taken a long time for this to come out but in short he was lying to the board. Now another two members with oversight have resigned. So Open AI have set up their own non independent committee to oversee the new launches, headed by Sam A. The worrying thing about non arts based AI is that they do not know how these LLM models actually work. They just keep feeding the beast. So the beast reports the rubbish it has digested, like in response to "How many rocks should i eat for a healthy diet , one small one" no of us presidents wrong, use glue to stick cheese covering to pizza etc etc So given the lack of (current) oversight of LLM the best way for LLMs to be more accurate is to feed them better quality food. In this case there is a good reason on both sides to pay good sums / fees for quality content. On the down side , the use of copyrighted material will result in more news media going behind paywalls to protect themselves. The Pets at Home article was rather light. Having to be nudged re the expansion of the CMA investigation to the whole pets market is very significant. I would not bet on it being insignificant, tell that to CVS shareholders. I vote keep Mark as chair ....

His advice regarding active v. passive, ie index funds is a triumph of hope over experience. He admits(quoting Buffet) that finding a good active manager is simple but not easy. But he implores us to find one! Even Buffet suggests the average investor is better in an index fund. Napier comes off as foolish in this interview.

I am a simple chap but I don’t think this man is thinking very clearly, he seems to suggest that there is a great advantage to some countries to come from China no longer being the provider of cheap overseas production to the west. Ok very simple logic there. But then he starts rambling on about different countries debts, you’re not investing in the country you investing in firms in the country remember? He is also a lawyer I believe? In my opinion the best background for this field is probably an economic historian. He also doesn’t like index funds but fails to properly explain why. Apart from that it’s really quite interesting.

The boards should be forced to pay out dividends. Buffett's hypocrisy on this isn't called out enough - smaller investors live on dividends, they can't wait five years to sell at opportune times. Meanwhile Buffett gets MONTHLY checks from his controlled businesses - real Houdini PR he pulled off there. Good guests, keep it up.
